What is Ghoti?

Ghoti is a web development and technology consulting studio. We build websites, fix broken ones, and solve technical problems that get in the way of whatever it may be you're trying to do.

Ghoti is pronounced like "fish," the aquatic animal. It's a jokey alternate spelling popularly attributed to George Bernard Shaw (though more correctly attributed to Charles Ollier (but I heard it most from my dad)).

Who is Ghoti?

Currently, Ghoti is me, Scott. I have worked as a web developer and creative problem solver for over fifteen years, primarily for digital agencies. Over that time I have developed a strong sense of how people actually engage with the internet and technology. With those insights, I work to help create and deliver technical solutions that are beneficial and user-centered.

Why is Ghoti?

The internet is a very different place today compared to 20, 10, or even 5 years ago. Individual websites have been abandoned in place of social media apps owned by faceless, and frankly quite evil, corporations. This ecosystem has left the denizens of the internet stranded in messy, predatory, and aggressive environment with less control over their own information and communications than ever before. I often say the modern web is hostile.

There is a reason things went this way. Social media applications provided a free platform for people and companies to share their ideas, wares, and whatever they wanted (provided it is allowed in the TOS). It put this information in front of a massive audience that was just learning the joys of algorithmic consumption. But all of this comes with a cost. Your information and data and behavior is mined for profit. Everything you do and write is harvested for training. You and the audience you have built are at the whim of the platform owner both operationally and ethically.

On the other hand, a platform agnostic and independent website is free from all of the ails and woes that we experience on corporate owned platforms. But websites require maintenance and technical knowledge. And websites cost money.

That's where Ghoti comes in.
